Norwich — Hannah Maynard, waterfront director for the Norwich Recreation Department beach at Spaulding Pond in Mohegan Park, was training her crew of lifeguards Thursday.

The team of eight, including Maynard, reviewed all their lifesaving practices, trained on the automated external defibrillator and got a primer on teaching basic swimming. They also took their swimming tests.

The beach opens June 24 and will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Tuesdays; it is closed Wednesdays. The department also will offer swimming lessons at the beach during July and August.
