Cape Verdean community raises ancestral island’s flag with pride
The Cape Verdean Flag Raising ceremony was held on Sunday, June 13, in downtown Norwich on the steps of City Hall. Cape Verde is an African island nation with a thriving community right here in Norwich for over 100 years.
The ceremony was organized by Global City Norwich with assistance from Angy Gardner, Pastor Candi Stewart of the International Family Worship Center (IFWC) in New London, and Patrick Rodrigues (President) and David Thorp (Vice President) of CVBP (Cape Verdean Beautiful People). Several local vendors were also at the event, including Norwich Nutrition, Main Avent Apparel, and Uncle D’s Blazin BBQ.
The day began with the raising of the Cape Verde flag, presided over by Norwich Mayor Peter Nystrom. Dozens of families enjoyed the festivities well into the evening, which included music from DJ Larry Love and live performances from Norwich’s own hip hop artist Drama and songstress Shantel C. The festival was a positive, peaceful celebration of Cape Verdean history and culture.
