Poetry in a Pandemic: A new day

    Magnolias bloom along the lane,

As if the world were fresh and new,

When, truth be told, there is a name

    Given to this deadly flu.

    And citizens are dying,

    The government is lying...

Yet, cardinals and finches dart in the brush,

As families find time to engage,

Celadon leaves emerge through the hush,

Lilacs wait a turn on the stage.

    And the land begins healing

    From humanity’s dealing...

While high on a limb, a hawk sits at rest,

Majestic, he looks to the sky,

And up on the hill, hear the laughter crest,

As young ones discover new ties.

    Now siblings are playing,

    Outdoors they are straying...

Daffodils bow and dance on the breeze,

    Faces turned toward the sun,

Bordering streams, they sway under trees,

    Move together as one.

    But society’s dying,

    Despite all the trying...

Mother Earth brings her glory to spring,

    Along with a nation-wide storm,

While the public adopts “social distancing”,

    Isolation becomes the new norm.

    Through the quiet of morning

    A new day is dawning...

May mankind be soon to rejoice,

    And take an overdo stand,

So raise a strong voice, a unanimous choice,

Pay heed to the lesson at hand.

    Now... the people are dying,

    While a country is crying...

    But the children keep playing,

    And souls remain praying ....

    To survive the new day...
