    Eagle underway to Virginia

    New London — With staysails and a giant U.S. flag flying, the Coast Guard barque Eagle departed New London Harbor for Portsmouth, Va., on Monday afternoon.

    Eagle left City Pier in New London with a class of Coast Guard officer candidates on board for training after being open for tourists as part of the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival.

    The ship will be open for tours at High Street Landing in Portsmouth Sept. 17 through Sept. 20.
