State's online sports-betting launch temporarily on hold

Thursday's expected launch of online sports betting in Connecticut — as well as that of retail sports betting at Connecticut Lottery Corp. locations — has been pushed back.

No new date for the launch has been set, according to a spokeswoman for the state Department of Consumer Protection.

"We are still working to finalize the details of the statewide online and retail launch of sports betting, and we are working with the licensees to ensure their platforms are certified and in compliance with the regulations prior to launch," Kaitlyn Krasselt, the spokeswoman, wrote in an email. "As such, no date has been set but we do not anticipate it to be a lengthy delay."

The Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes launched on-site sports betting at their respective casinos — Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun — last Thursday. The tribes, like the lottery, are waiting for the state to grant clearance for them to start taking online sports wagers via computers and mobile devices anywhere in the state. The tribes also are waiting to launch online casino gaming.

After Gov. Ned Lamont placed a bet last Thursday on the Connecticut Sun, the Mohegan-owned WNBA team that plays at Mohegan Sun Arena, the casino announced it was suspending betting on WNBA teams due to conflict-of-interest concerns.

"We are in the process of working with the WNBA to update our SOPs (standard operating procedures) and have decided to take WNBA wagering off until this is finalized," Jeff Hamilton, president and general manager of Mohegan Sun, said in a statement.

The Sun's season ended Wednesday night in a playoff loss to the Chicago Sky in Chicago.
