Urgo endorses candidates for North Stonington elections

North Stonington — First Selectman Mike Urgo, who isn't seeking reelection, announced that he is endorsing Mustapha Ratib for treasurer in Tuesday's election, and Toula Balestracci and Nicole Porter for selectwomen.

His news release didn't mention their party, but all three are Democrats. Ratib is facing Republican candidate Shawn Murphy, and Brett Mastroianni is the Republican candidate for selectman.

"It is critically important we have someone qualified in this role who understands financing," Urgo said of town treasurer. "Not only is Mustapha an accountant but he spent nearly a decade on the Board of Finance where he was a chief architect of our budgets. We are truly fortunate to have someone like Mustapha willing to run for this position."

Urgo pointed to the service on town boards and professional experience of Balestracci and Porter, saying, "With this team helping lead our town we can be proud and confident of the direction North Stonington is heading."

North Stonington residents can now vote for two candidates for selectman, whereas they could previously only vote for one.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the North Stonington Education Center at 298 Norwich-Westerly Road.
