Stonington school board elects Rajab as chairman

Stonington — The Board of Education on Wednesday chose Democratic member Farouk Rajab to be its new chairman for the next year.

Rajab, who was reelected this month, replaces Frank Todisco, whose term on the board expired. Rajab served two months as acting chairman last year after former Chairwoman Alexa Garvey resigned from the board and before Todisco was appointed to fill a vacancy.

In addition, the board reelected Republican Heidi Simmons as its secretary.

As chairman, Rajab will lead the board as it chooses a new superintendent to replace the retiring Van Riley, decides how to spend millions of dollars in federal COVID-19 aid, approves a budget for 2022-23 and deals with a number of costly infrastructure needs in the schools.
