Stonington to first consider inside candidates for police chief job
Stonington — The Board of Police Commissioners agreed Tuesday on a procedure to replace Chief J. Darren Stewart, who has announced he is retiring.
The board will begin by accepting applications from members of the department who hold the rank of lieutenant or above. That group comprises Capt. Todd Olson, Lt. Michael Peckham and Lt. Bryan Schneider. Each has until the end of this month to submit a cover letter, resume and three letters of recommendation, one of which has to be from a current police chief other than Stewart.
The board then will interview the candidates.
If there are no internal candidates, the board will seek applications from outside the department.
Stewart, 58, has been a member of the department for the past 38 years and succeeded former Chief David Erskine in 2008. Stewart, who is the longest-serving chief in the department's history, has said he plans to assist the department in a transition to a new chief and depart by July 1, 2022.
