In The Times: Looking to launch people-oriented feature stories written by all of you

By Lee Howard, Day Community Editor

Who’s the most interesting, accomplished person you know? Perhaps a person who never seeks or accepts credit for all their accomplishments?

The Times is looking to launch a new feature this year, and we need your help to do it. We’re asking you to interview an interesting person you know, take a picture and send a story and photo to us for the feature Lives of Our Times.

A story with your byline will appear in your hometown paper and probably most of our other editions as well (we have nine of them now).

Where to start? Well, seniors often have fascinating stories to tell.

So if you’re a senior center official, consider having other seniors or staff interview your most interesting clients, or if you are a senior housing administrator invite in a group of students from a local school to conduct interviews, as Pine Point School has been doing for many years at StoneRidge in Stonington.

Or perhaps you are a community service organization. Why not interview longtime residents of your town as part of your community service, to keep alive the history of your town.

Or maybe you run a business-boosting organization, or a cultural group. Why not interview key business leaders and cultural icons in your area?

Stuck for questions? I can provide you a list to get started. But the fun is to dream up your own in response to some of the memories you hear.

How to get it all down right? Use a video or recording device on your phone and make a transcript (free apps are available online), then hone in on a theme. If some of the interview seems unclear, call back for clarification. Focus on the challenges the person you interview has overcome to help identify the most interesting threads of the story.

Stories don’t have to be long. We are looking for somewhere between 150 and 300 words, though that could be increased for extraordinarily interesting stories.

In addition to our Lives of Our Times feature, we are always looking for writers interested in contributing news items, stories, historical perspectives and columns. You can write to me at l.howard@theday.com for more information. Meanwhile, happy new year!
