Looking for hidden treasures in Montville

The newest business at Center Plaza at 1100 Norwich-New London Turnpike in Uncasville, right next to Breakfast at Diana’s, is Second Chance Consignment & Treasures, and business partners Laurie Soulor and Sandy Kohler know what they’re trying to do.

“I know the image of what we want,” Kohler said.

The concept is simple: If you have anything you want to sell, bring it in. Any items go on the floor for 60 days and, if it sells, you split it 50-50 with Soulor and Kohler.

But there’s a little more to it.

The two want to be an engaged part of the community, so they have taken steps to do just that.

They put out a free box with items that anyone can take. After 30 days, any clothes are automatically discounted. They take a weekly trip to St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich with donations. And they’re not holding anything hostage.

“We want everyone to have a fair and equitable split,” Soulor said. “If you change your mind or if you need something back, I’d rather have the community have it.”

The space itself, one of seven businesses at the recently remodeled mini-mall, is clean and big, actually two storefronts, and is split up into different sections.

“It’s big enough that people can stay for a long time and look around and actually shop,” Kohler said. “You could spend hours in here.”

And the shop has a bit of everything.

Plenty of clothes, shoes, jewelry, furniture, books, bags and artwork. It also has different specialty rooms, including for young children and toddlers.

There’s also a men’s room with tools, telescopes, memorabilia (Wheaties boxes!), luggage and more.

The kitchen room offers spice racks, knife sets, rolling pins, crockpots and wine racks.

“You never know what you’re going to find,” Soulor said.

Second Chance Consignments & Treasures is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The store is closed on Monday.
