Stonington — Residents voted 23-3 at Monday's town meeting to approve a voting redistricting plan.

The town had to develop the plan after the state realigned its state House and Senate districts. Until now, Stonington was part of the 43rd state House District. Under the new plan, voting District 4 in Mystic and voting District 1 in the borough will be part of the 41st House District while the rest of the town, voting districts 2, 3 and 5, will be part of the 43rd House District.

The proposed redistricting plan also has meant the populations of the five voting districts will be more equalized, as opposed to the current status, in which voting District 2 in Pawcatuck has 7,289 voters while District 3 in the middle of town has just 1,596. The new configuration means three districts will have between 3,609 and 3,681 voters, while two will have 3,102 and 2,245.

The redistricting will take effect in August if there are any primaries. If there are no primaries, it will take effect for the November election. The plan also includes changes to the locations of polling places.

Voting will take place as follows:

District 1: Stonington Borough firehouse

District 2: Former Pawcatuck Middle School

District 3: St. Michael's Church, Pawcatuck

District 4: Stonington Middle School, Mystic

District 5: Former school administration building, Old Mystic

Voters will receive a mailing in May and this fall alerting them to the changes and where they will vote. The town's website, stonington-ct.gov, also has information about the redistricting.
