At the Ledyard Town Council’s April 27 meeting, Chairman Kevin Dombrowski presented Commander Garth Storz, Commanding Officer of the USS Colorado, on behalf of Subbase Commander, Captain Kenneth M. Curtin, a proclamation recognizing April as the Month of the Military Child.

The idea was to bring awareness and recognize the sacrifices and challenges military children make with their parents’ service to our country.

The proclamation noted the significant place the New London-Groton subbase holds in our nation’s history being designated the United States’ first Navy submarine base and being named the “Home of the Submarine Force” in 1916.

Today, the base occupies approximately 687 acres along the Thames River, with active-duty personnel totaling about 7,500 personnel accompanied by 12,000 family members.

The base is also the host to Naval Reserve Units, an Army Detachment Unit and a host for the Department of Defense. In addition, the United States Coast Guard Academy is located across the Thames River on the west bank, in New London.=
