Sen. Somers endorsed for fourth term

State Sen. Heather Somers announced in a news release that she unanimously was endorsed on Monday by the 18th Senate District Republican Convention for her fourth term.

"We have a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm in this campaign, and I thank the delegates for their continued support,” Somers said in a statement. “I am asking for the support of Democrats, Republicans, Independents and Unaffiliated voters in November.”

She "spoke of her ongoing successful efforts to pass policies which make Connecticut safer and more affordable" and "cited her emphasis on constituent service and helping eastern Connecticut residents navigate issues related to insurance, DMV, unemployment benefits and bureaucratic red tape," according to the release.

Somers lives in the Mystic section of Groton with her husband, Mark, and three children. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Connecticut and is the ranking senator on the General Assembly's Transportation Committee and Public Health Committee. She also chaired the Communications Subcommittee of the state's Vaccine Advisory Task Force, and serves on the Appropriations and Executive and Legislative Nomination committees, according to the release.

The 18th Senate District encompasses Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Sterling, Stonington, Plainfield, Preston and Voluntown.

Stonington Board of Education Chairman Farouk Rajab received the Democratic endorsement for the seat last week.
