    Traffic alert, road closures announced for Groton's Fourth of July Parade on Monday

    Groton — Town police are notifying residents of road closures and possible heavy traffic during the town’s annual Fourth of July Parade on Monday.

    “To ensure the safety and security of parade participants and spectators, the Town of Groton Police Department announces a Traffic Alert and Road Closures" on Monday between 9:50 a.m. and 1 p.m., in the Fort Hill Road, Poquonnock Bridge (Route 1), Poquonnock Road and Long Hill Road areas, police said in a news release.

    The parade starts at 10 a.m. Monday from the area of the Fort Hill Road and Ring Drive section of Route 1, and proceeds west on Route 1, to the Groton Shopping Plaza off Long Hill Road at Drozdyk Drive, according to the news release. Participating vehicles and floats will stage at Poquonnock Plains Park, 1 Central Ave., prior to the parade's start.

    Police warn Midway Oval residents to expect traffic congestion on and around Central Avenue, Vergennes Court, Newtown Road (Route 117) and Depot Road.

    “We encourage residents to be aware of this and plan accordingly,” police said in the news release.
