    New London ― Members of the incoming class of 2026 at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy got started on their sailing lessons Thursday at the academy waterfront sailing center on Jacob’s Rock.

    The members of Golf and Hotel platoons learned about basic safety and sailing skills, practiced sailing close to the boathouse, capsizing and righting the 420 class sailboats.

    The swabs, as the members of the class are known, are in the third week of the seven-week Swab Summer indoctrination program.
