Free fares extended for New London SmartRide through Nov. 30

A pilot program for fare-free, on-demand public transportation in New London will be extended through Nov. 30.

The New London Parking Authority started SmartRide in December with Southeast Area Transit “as a free pilot program to determine interest,” according to a news release.

The service began collecting $1.75 fares, or 85-cent discounted fares for eligible riders, earlier this summer, with daily, weekly and monthly passes also available. Due to the popularity of the service, SmartRide again will be fare-free as of Monday, according to Carey E. Redd II, CEO and Director of the Parking Authority.

“Smart Ride has been overwhelmingly successful and by extending the pilot program until November 30, the ridership will be able to continue to utilize the on-demand public transportation service for free,” Redd said in a statement. “This would be consistent with the free fares on fixed route public transportation service statewide.”

People can use a smartphone app to schedule on-demand rides from small buses that pick up and drop off passengers within New London. The buses are ADA accessible.

The service was implemented in partnership with the NLPA, SEAT, and Spare, a microtransit app company. Customers without smartphones are able to request rides by calling (860) 934-5234.
