North Stonington — The annual harvest of the wine grapes at Jonathan Edwards Winery began Wednesday.

Vineyard Manager Chris Moore got his volunteers started at 8 a.m. for the first harvest of the fall, and expected the day’s harvest to be done by lunchtime.

The harvest began with Gewürztraminer, a white wine grape which is the least cultivated of the four varieties grown at the winery.

The winery also grows Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, and Chardonnay grapes, which will be harvested over the coming weeks.

Moore says the summer drought did not adversely affect the grapes, though the excessive rains this month were not helpful.

The Gewürztraminer wine is a quick turnaround and should be available in the winery store by early next summer.
