    Friends & Neighbors: Fitch senior accepted into elite drum corps

    We are thrilled to announce that after hours of practice, months of auditioning and years of preparation, Cavan Grundy, a senior at Fitch High School, has been contracted as a baritone horn player to be a member of The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, located in Tempe, Ariz.

    The Academy, entering its 17th season, is a World Class Drum Corps that is a member of Drum Corp International (DCI). The summer experience begins for the 2023 corps on June 2, corps members will move in for the summer experience; following that is a four-week schedule of 12-hour rehearsal days in preparation for the competition season. On June 30 The Academy will have its first performance at a competition in Vista, Calif. From there, over the next 6 weeks, the corps will travel the country via coach bus performing in 19 different shows in 13 states: Arizona, California, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. The season will conclude in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Drum Corp International World Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium, on August 10–12.

    Last summer, Cavan marched with the local Open Class Drum Corps, 7th Regiment. He also participates in the Fitch Marching Band (baritone horn and drum major), concert band (baritone horn), string orchestra (cello), jazz ensemble (double-bass and electric bass), and Fitch Winter Color Guard. Last year was the main character on his cello in the inaugural season of SEC Percussion. He will be traveling with members of the Fitch music community from March 21–26 to the Honolulu Heritage Music Festival in Hawaii. They will also be performing at Pearl Harbor while they are there.

    He auditioned a couple weeks ago at UConn and is waiting for his hopeful acceptance into their music program. He wants to major in music education.
