    New London offers public warming centers ahead of cold weather

    New London ― The city and local nonprofits have announced the openings of public warming centers in advance of the intense cold weather expected in the area over the next few days.

    The Homeless Hospitality Center, located at 325 Huntington St., will be open in the daytime on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Masks are required. The center offers showers, a landline, Wi-Fi, a photocopier, a mail center, desktop computers, and a twice-weekly Community Health Center clinic. Nighttime hours are from 6 p.m. til check out at 6 a.m. A 211 call is unnecessary before arriving at the shelter.

    A daytime warming center is also open at the New London Public Library at 63 Huntington Street in the Adult Reading Room. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.

    New London Police and Fire Department personnel will closely monitor those at risk or needing shelter. Community members are encouraged to check on their family members and neighbors who might be at risk and require additional assistance during this cold period.

    For individuals experiencing housing and rent difficulties, please visit the NLHHC Housing Resource Center at 727 Bank St. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Or call the center at 860-501-9900 to make an appointment.
