New London ― The city’s Human Services Department is hosting a workshop next week to help individuals and organizations apply for grants in the last round of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

The May 30 workshop will take place at the New London Public Library at 5 p.m. The deadline for submitting grant applications is June 16.

Director of Human Services Jeanne Milstein said the intent is to “make New London a city where everyone has a fair shot at well-being” by funding individuals and organizations working toward that goal.

Opportunity Grants will provide up to $20,000 for individuals, informal networks, small grassroots organizations and community-based businesses to fund projects initiated by people who have historically been blocked from opportunities, including Indigenous populations, people of color, immigrants, people under 30, and people with criminal records.

Projects that focus on neighbors helping neighbors, peer support and similar approaches will be given priority.

Innovation Grants will provide up to $200,000 for nonprofits, large businesses and other institutions such as hospitals or schools. Projects in this category should focus on providing equity by meeting the needs of challenged communities and working toward eliminating systemic and structural barriers.

Applicants will be required to provide a proposed budget, enter a contract with the city and show accountability for all spending.

Organizations that have previously received a grant from humansServices may apply but priority will be given to organizations not previously funded.
