    Norwich cottage fire under investigation

Norwich ― Police and fire officials are investigating a fire Saturday afternoon at a cottage in the area of 401 W. Thames St.

Police said the cottage belongs to the Michael Kerr Respite Program, a short-term residential living center for individuals diagnosed with mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders.

The Norwich Fire Department and several local fire departments responded to a call at 2 p.m. for the structure fire and found smoke coming from the attic of cottage No. 8, according to a news release. All occupants were accounted for and had exited the building safely.

The release said the fire was under control and there were no reported injuries, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Norwich police and state police were on the scene for a extended period of time and warned of travel delays in this area.
