    Fire strikes church in Taftville

    Norwich — The Taftville Congregational Church building at 16 North B St. was engulfed in flames late Saturday night, Norwich police said in a news release.

    An officer on patrol noticed the fire just after 10 p.m. and reported that it was spreading quickly. The building was soon fully engulfed.

    The church was believed to be unoccupied at the time of the fire. The blaze was under control by 11:30 p.m.

    Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Norwich police at (860) 886-5561 extension 6 or the department’s anonymous tip line at (860) 886-5561 extension 4. All calls will be kept confidential.

    The building was constructed in 1904 on land given by the owners of Ponemah Mill, according to the website historicbuildingsct.com.
