Stonington schools superintendent receives high praise in her first evaluation

Stonington ― The Board of Education praised Superintendent Mary Anne Butler for her commitment, leadership and fiscal responsibility to the school system in her first annual evaluation since being promoted to the job last year.

The board gave Butler a 3% raise, boosting her annual salary to $206,000. It also extended her contract by one year, so she continues to work under a three-year deal.

Butler, who had been the district’s assistant superintendent, took over as superintendent last year after Van Riley retired.

“Through strategic budget planning, you have effectively allocated funds to maximize educational opportunities while ensuring the sustainability and efficiency of our district's operations,” wrote board Chairman Farouk Rajab, in a letter to Butler.

He credited Butler’s ability to work with teachers, staff, parents and the community as well as her holistic approach to education with fostering a supportive and empowering learning environment.

Rajab commended Butler for her staunch commitment to academic excellence, for both staff and students.

He complimented her dedication to and genuine interest in student well-being and educational success, which he said has cultivated a supportive and inclusive environment to meet the needs of the diverse student population.

“Your vision, dedication, and ability to inspire and unite our educational community have made a profound impact on the lives of our students and educators. The positive trajectory and growth we have experienced under your guidance are a testament to your outstanding leadership,” he wrote.
