Norwich ― City officials will check twice before purchasing a 6.24-acre piece of vacant property at 57 Roath St., offered by the owner’s estate for $10,000.

It is unusual to find such a large undeveloped property in the heart of downtown Norwich, but the land has complications, leading the City Council to delay a vote on whether to accept the offer from the estate of former owner Bradford Pottle.

The property is hilly, rocky and is mostly landlocked, with a narrow frontage on Roath Street, said Public Works Director Patrick McLaughlin, who checked out the property. The land also has ruins, with side walls and foundation, of what appears to be an industrial building, with some machinery still in place.

The proposed sale would be “as is,” and the city would need to pay the $1,000 transaction fees on top of the purchase price.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to withdraw a resolution for the purchase based on McLaughlin’s recommendation to allow time to investigate the building remains and the prior uses of the property.
