Residents can continue to apply for energy assistance

Residents can continue to apply for energy assistance this heating season.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program remains open and local agencies, such as Thames Valley Council for Community Action Inc., are continuing to accept applications, according to a news release.

Residents who need help paying utility bills and heating costs can apply for energy assistance at their local agency, which in the region is TVCCA. The state administers the federal program, which in the state is called Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. The program dates are Sept. 1, 2023-May 31, 2024.

According to the news release, the program continues to run based on the state’s initial allocation of $72 million. President Joe Biden has proposed an additional $1.6 billion nationally, which is contingent on approval by Congress.

Homeowners and renters interested in the program should contact their local agency for more information and to make an application appointment and learn which documentation they should bring. The agency will start certifying deliveries in November.

People can visit www.cafca.org for more information or to find their local agency, or can call (860) 832-9438. In the region, TVCCA can be reached at (860) 425-6681.
