Puzzled by The Day’s crossword lately?

Some of our readers have noticed the syndicated daily crossword puzzle we publish in The Day is different.

That’s because longtime puzzle creator Jacqueline E. Mathews, whom many of you referred to fondly as “Jackie” when you called to ask where she’s gone, has retired after a prolific career of creating crosswords, Rick DeChantal, sales director for Tribune Content Agency, which supplies the puzzle to The Day, said via email.

Stella Zawistowski is the new creator of what is known as the Daily Commuter Crossword. Her puzzles have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Games World of Puzzles, the Wall Street Journal, and other venues.

“A perennial top-10 finisher at the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, Stella is also an accomplished speed solver,” DeChantal noted in the email. “Her fastest time on the New York Times Sunday puzzle is 4 minutes, 31 seconds.”

Changes are inevitable with any new creator, but keeping with the original nature of the puzzle is the goal, DeChantal said. He said reader feedback would be used in making changes, if needed.

Readers who wish to comment on the new puzzle can call the Tribune Content Agency at (312) 222-4131.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
