Don’t give up on The Day’s crossword puzzle

Beginning Feb. 5, our readers may be a little less puzzled by the syndicated daily crossword published in The Day’s print and e-paper editions.

Devoted puzzle solvers earlier this month noticed the puzzle was different. Some of you told us it was more difficult and you were not enjoying it as much.

Tribune Content Agency, which provides what is known as the Daily Commuter Puzzle, said longtime puzzle creator Jacqueline E. Mathews has retired. The syndicate’s new puzzle creator is Stella Zawistowski, whose crosswords have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Games World of Puzzles, the Wall Street Journal, and other venues.

“After receiving feedback about the puzzle's difficulty, some clues have been revised to ensure the puzzle is easier to solve,” Rick DeChantal, sales director for Tribune Content Agency, said via email this week.

You may not notice the changes immediately, since the puzzles are created weeks in advance.

DeChantal said several clues in the Daily Commuter puzzles for the week of Feb. 5 and the rest of February have been revised and Zawistowski has “taken additional actions in decreasing the difficulty level currently of puzzles in production for release in March.” All the measures in decreasing the difficulty level will be in place starting in March, he added.
