Norwich city offices lost phone, internet service

Norwich ― A computer equipment malfunction at Norwich Public Utilities interrupted telephone and internet service to City Hall, fire and police offices on Tuesday morning, although the emergency 911 system remained operational, NPU and fire officials said.

The phones were down from 9:30 a.m. to shortly before 11 a.m. NPU spokesman Chris Riley said a malfunction in the computer servers caused the outage. Crews were concentrating on completing the repair before investigating the cause of the outage. NPU provides telephone and internet service to city offices.

The outage slowed the NPU bill payment system, but Riley said customers were able to make payments.

Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Montoya said the outage affected routine office lines and some low-band fire radios, but the emergency 911 system remained operational throughout the outage.
