Pawcatuck firm announces second major Navy contract in as many weeks

Stonington — Local technology firm Rite-Solutions Inc. announced on Monday that it had secured an $88 million United States Navy contract, the biggest award in company history.

“We punch way above our weight class. It’s something I’ve always been proud of,” said Rite-Solutions co-founder and CEO Joe Marino on Monday.

The veteran-owned small business, with offices in Pawcatuck, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Middletown, R.I., received the three-year Imaging and Electromagnetic Warfare contract to support the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Electromagnetic Systems Department in Newport, R.I.

The Electromagnetic Systems Department deals with development, acquisition, installation, modernization, and maintenance of submarine electromagnetic systems including antennas, periscopes and electronic warfare systems among others.

“Electromagnetic warfare is really a cyber approach to warfare. Rather than firing weapons, what electronic warfare does is collect intelligence on the enemy,” explained Marino. “Think of it as a benign way of conducting warfare without actually firing weapons.”

Rite-Solutions will be the primary contractor and work with 13 subcontractors to provide design, development, testing, analysis, integration, and installation services, as well as the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, upgrade, and modernization of existing systems.

Approximately 50 of the company’s 475 employees will work on the contract.

“We are very pleased that the Navy has entrusted us with this contract, because we’re hoping it will be groundbreaking for companies like Rite-Solutions, at our size, to do that kind of work,” Marino said.

“We pride ourselves on being very cost competitive in the marketplace, especially against the big guys who have more infrastructure they have to deal with,” Marino said, adding he hopes the Navy will consider giving more awards to small and medium-sized businesses that can provide the same expertise at reduced cost.

This is the second large Navy contract Rite-Solutions has announced recently. In mid-March, the company announced it had received a five-year, $60.7 million contract to provide services in areas including software engineering, systems administration, support services and cybersecurity for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center division responsible for strategic planning, operations, maintenance and compliance of the center’s IT systems and infrastructure.
