    Local roundup: Waterford volleyball edges Fitch 3-2

    Groton — Waterford won the fifth game 15-6 to pull out a 3-2 win over Fitch in a high school volleyball match on Friday.

    Waterford won the first two games by scores of 25-23 and Fitch answered with 25-21 wins in the third and fourth games.

    Sydney Tabor had six aces, Gretchen Dusza had 43 assists and Ryleigh Gonyo had 18 kills for Waterford (9-2). Karli Morales had 22 assists and seven digs, Nora Ryan had 10 kills, Marayah Dart had seven kills and Aby Hagley had 10 service points for Fitch (6-6).

    In other matches: 

    • Woodstock Academy defeated Ledyard 25-15, 25-13 and 25-9. Sela Gill had nine assists to lead the Colonels (6-7).

    • Courtney Majewski had 12 service points, nine aces and six digs to highlight Norwich Tech's 24-6, 21-25, 25-15 and 25-10 win over Windham Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Emily Cherwin added nine blocks and one kill for the Warriors (11-3, 7-1).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Stonington broke open a close game with two second-half goals to beat Waterford 3-0 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Abby Flakus scored in the first half for the Bears (8-2, 7-0) while Trinity Lennon and Sarah Schrempf scored in the second half. Waterford is 6-3, 5-3.

    H.S. swimming

    • Freshman Ella Dyjak won two events as Waterford defeated Ledyard 101-84 in the ECC. Dyjak captured the 200-meter individual medley (2:36.31) and 400 freestyle (4:44.02) while Jayne Darras captured the 100 free (1:09.55) and was part of two winning relay teams for the Lancers (6-3, 6-3). Olivia Strelevitz won the 200 free (2:19.50) and 100 backstroke (1:10.76) for the Colonels (4-6, 4-5).

    College volleyball

    • Southern Vermont cruised to a 25-19, 25-17 and 25-18 victory over Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference. Myia Williams had eight kills for the Mariners (0-12, 0-2) while Italia Krick added 17 digs and Lauren Tompkins had 17 assists.
