    Local colleges: Coast Guard men win eighth straight

    New London — Nolan Benson came off the bench to score a season-high 14 points as Coast Guard Academy won its eighth straight with a 67-52 non-conference men's basketball victory over Salve Regina on Sunday.

    Benson was 7 for 9 from the floor and added six rebounds while Justin Kane (13 points), Noah Baldez (13) and Bryce Schroeder (10) also finished in double figures for the Bears (8-1). Kane added a team-high eight rebounds.

    Coast Guard held a 28-23 halftime lead, but began the secon hald with an 8-0 run in the first two minutes (six by Schroeder) to open a 36-23 lead. Salve (5-5) was able to pull within four, 43-39, with 12:05 remaining, but the Bears put the game away with a 15-3 spurt.

    The Bears open their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference season on Wednesday at Emerson College.

    In other games:

    • Collin Sawyer, a sophomore from New London, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Brandeis University a 76-73 victory over Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Sawyer finished with 12 points (four 3-pointers) for the Judges (3-6), his fourth consecutive game in double figures.

    • Maine-Presque Isle led 40-22 at halftime and went on to beat Connecticut College 74-60 in a nonleague game on Saturday. David Labossiere had 16 points and four assists, Phil Leotsakos had 13 points and six rebounds and Dan Draffan came off the bench for 10 points for Conn (5-6).

    Women's hockey

    • Freshmen Mairi Anthony and Erin Dillon scored two goals apiece as No. 9 Conn College routed William Smith 4-0 at Dayton Arena. The Camels (6-2-1) completed a weekend sweep of the Herons (7-2-1), both wins coming via shutout. Goalie Bailey Mertz stopped 13 shots to earn her second straight shutout.

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College lost to Hobart 5-1 in a nonleague game at Chelsea Piers in New York City on Saturday. Greg Pezza scored for Conn (3-5) off an assist from Kyle Moss.
