Black Wolves face cruicial stretch vs. the East

The New England Black Wolves are in first place in the National Lacrosse League’s Eastern Division at 6-4. The other four teams in the division, though, are all within a game of the Wolves in the win column.

And that’s exactly who’s on the upcoming schedule for New England, which will play four straight Eastern Division teams, beginning with Friday night’s matchup with the Toronto Rock (6-6), scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Wolves follow with games against Buffalo (6-5), March 23 at home; at Georgia (5-7) March 24; and at Buffalo on March 31. It is New England’s second straight game against Toronto, coming off an 8-7 overtime win across the Canadian border on Sunday.

“It’s very important, more so because it’s in the East,” New England coach Glenn Clark said during his weekly conference call. “We see how tight everything is in the East. … The potential to get tiebreakers against teams is very important, especially when it appears it will be tight right down the stretch.

“This is for the tiebreaker (against Toronto). Buffalo on the Friday, which would get us back into the tiebreaker ... they all impact it in one way or another. Being able to grab a couple of wins there does a lot for you.”

The Black Wolves have won two straight games in overtime — “pretty stressful,” Clark said — with Kevin Crowley scoring 2:08 into overtime Sunday against the Rock and goalie Aaron Bold producing a career-best 51 saves. Callum Crawford, making his New England debut, finished with a goal and two assists.

Crowley leads the Wolves in goals with 27, tying him for third in the NLL, and is the team’s points leader with 41. Stephan Leblanc has a team-high 23 assists.

Adam Jones paces Toronto with 24 goals and 37 assists for 61 points.

The Black Wolves are 6-0 this season in games decided by four goals or fewer.

“We’re certainly testing our composure the last couple of weeks,” Clark said. “They get tighter and tighter as you go.”
