    Local roundup: Old Lyme softball enters Shoreline tourney on a high note

    Old Lyme — Old Lyme ended its regular season with a 12-3 win over Morgan in a Shoreline Conference softball game on Thursday.

    The Wildcats (13-7, 11-5) are the No. 4 seed in the Shoreline tournament and host No. 5 Valley Regional in a quarterfinal on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

    Maddie Cann was 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, Grace Lathrop was 2-forf-4 with two runs scored and an RBI double, Catey Battalino was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Audrey Gavin earned the win, striking out 11 with three walks.

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Fitch's Colin Fahey was the medalist with a 3-over-par 39 at Stonington Country Club in the Falcons' 7-0 win over Wheeler. Charlie Bresnahan, Nishant Patel, Drew McCormick and Bret Noreika also won matches for Fitch (8-7).

    • Waterford beat Windham/Parish Hlil 7-0 behind medalist Ryan Sadosky and his 36 at The Windham Club. Nick Hynes, Joe Lathrop, Bruce Taggart (38), Nick Zhangetti and Sydney Tabor also won matches for the Lancers (9-10).

    • Montville's Sam Gaboury was the medalist in a 5-2 loss to Griswold. Gaboury shot an even-par 37 at River Ridge Golf Course and Joe Faulise also won his match for Montville (1-14).

    College track & field

    • Connecticut College's Scott Mason advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase during his qualifying race at the NCAA Division III Championships in La Crosse, Wisc. The junior placed fifth in the second heat in 9:19.36, the sixth fastest overall time among 20 competitors in the two heats. Mason, who earned All-American honors last year, will run in the finals on Saturday.

    H.S. track & field

    • Old Lyme's 4x800-meter relay team of William Bartlett, Casey Blue, Nick Myers and Trevor Wells placed fourth in 8:42.31 during Wednesday's Shoreline Conference Championship meet at Old Saybrook. They were the only boys' place-winners for the Wildcats. In the girls' meet, Old Lyme's Sarah Kwon finished fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.38) and Ada Harjunpaa was sixth in the triple jump (31 feet, 10.5 inches).
