    Local roundup: Waterford 15s lose to Concord, 3-2

    Augusta, Me. — The Waterford Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball team lost its first game of the postseason, falling to New Hampshire champion Concord 3-2 in the New England tournament on Sunday.

    Waterford, which finished pool play at 2-1, plays Medford (Mass.) in a single-elimination game on Monday at 3 p.m., with the winner advancing to Tuesday's semifinals. 

    Concord, which earned a bye into the semis with the win, led 3-0 after four innings. Waterford scored twice in the fifth. Losing pitcher Ryan Bakken struck out six over five innings. Trey Brennan singled, doubled and drove in a run, Bakken had two hits and Dan Driscoll had a hit and scored a run for Waterford.

    LL baseball (9-11)

    • Mystic advanced to the championship round of the state tournament at East Hampton, beating Westport 3-0. The District 10 champions play the winner of Monday's Westport-Simsbury game on Tuesday. A Mystic loss would force a final game on Wednesday. Dylan Joyce allowed two hits over 4.2 innings with nine strikeouts and five walks. Griffin Pollard earned the save, striking out all four batters he faced. Finn Eck had two hits and scored a run, Tomas Rogers tripled and scored a run and pinch-runner Daniel Lindy also scored for Mystic. 

    NECBL all-stars

    • Five players from the Mystic Schooners were named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League all-star team. Thomas Girard (Duke), Chris Troye (UC Santa Barbera), Brett Rodriguez (Wofford), Anthony Cruz (Quinnipiac) and Sebastiano Santorelli (Seton Hall) were all picked to the South team for the NECBL All-Star Game. The game will be played on Sunday, July 29 at Holyoke, Mass. 

    Legion baseball

    • Niantic's game against West Hartford in the state tournament was suspended due to rain. Niantic leads 1-0 after two innings. The winners' bracket game will resume at East Lyme High School on Monday at 7 p.m. Waterford's losers' bracket game at Tolland was postponed. It will be played Monday beginning at 5:45 p.m.

    Tigers rained out

    • The New York-Penn League doubleheader with the Connecticut Tigers playing at the Aberdeen IronBirds was rained out. The first game was scoreless in the top of the third inning when play was suspended. That game will be resumed on August 29 when the Tigers return to Aberdeen. The second game will be rescheduled at a later date.
