    Local roundup: Stonington tops Ledyard in boys' soccer

    Stonington — The Stonington boys' soccer team finished off what it had started 12 days ago, beating Ledyard 1-0 on Sunday night.

    The Bears led 1-0 on Oct. 2 when the game was suspended due to lightning. The final 32:14 of the second half was played Sunday and the goal held up. Freshman Sam Montalto scored 5:30 into the game with an assist from Tyler Fidrych.

    Peter Fernholz made four saves for Stonington (12-1) and Ken Turner had nine saves for Ledyard (10-3).

    In other games:

    • Old Lyme was outshot 15-4 in a 3-0 loss to Guilford in a Shoreline Conference game on Saturday night. Ryan Tetreault made four saves for Old Lyme (3-10-1). 

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Lyman Memorial scored four goals in the first half and went on to beat Wheeler 5-0 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV game. Addie Hauptmann made 10 saves for Wheeler (0-9-3, 0-6-2). 

    Women's soccer

    • Sophia Danyko-Kulchycky scored three goals and had an assist as UConn beat Cincinnati 4-0 in an American Athletic Conference game. Pato Jerzak had a goal and an assist and Randi Palacios made four saves for UConn (3-11, 1-4).

    College field hockey

    • Top-ranked North Carolina beat No. 5 UConn 2-1 in a game played at Boston College. Marissa Creatore scored off a rebound in the 47th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lead the Tar Heels (15-0) to victory. UConn's Kourtney Kennedy scored in the 43rd minute to tie the game at 1-1. Svea Boker and Antonia Tiedtke had assists for UConn (12-3).

    Road racing

    • Marshall Johnson of North Stonington won the St. Michael School 5K on Saturday in Pawcatuck, finishing in 18:38. Rebekah Kepple of Stonington was the top women's finisher, coming in sixth with a time of 23:02.

    Also finishing in the top 10 were Steven DeCastro of Pawcatuck (19:07), Tommy Belchik of Pawcatuck (21:57), Robert Burdick of Westerly (22:24), Thaddeus Yates of Pawcatuck (23:01), Danielle Yates of Pawcatuck (23:27), Paul Andruskiewicz of Preston (23:36), John Brown of Oakdale (23:46) and Paul Gray of Pawcatuck (24:09).
