    Local roundup: Old Lyme girls win Class S soccer opener

    Old Lyme — Dani McCarthy scored a pair of goals as 14th-seeded Old Lyme began defense of its championship with a convincing 5-0 victory over No. 19 Windsor Locks in the first round of the CIAC Class S girls' soccer tournament on Monday.

    The Wildcats (9-5-4) advance to Wednesday's second round at No. 3 Cromwell at 4 p.m. The Panthers have beaten Old Lyme twice this season, including the first round of the recent Shoreline Conference tournament. Cromwell had a first-round bye.

    Mya Johnson added a goal and an assist for the Wildcats while Kaylee Armenia and Britney DeRoehn each scored a goal.

    In other games:

    • Michaela MacCracken scored a pair of goals as No. 8 Montville defeated No. 5 Griswold 3-0 in the Class M first round. Olivia Meehan added a goal and an assist for the Indians (15-5), who will host No. 8 Ellington in Wednesday's second round at 5:30 p.m., while Lauren Velazquez had two assists and goalie Lauren Ross made six saves for the shutout.

    • Kaleigh Bolduc scored a pair of goals as No. 11 Stonington cruised to a 6-0 victory over No. 22 Innovation in the Class M first round. Alex Jefson and Emma Sabbadini added one goal and one assist apiece for the Bears (15-4-1), who play at No. 6 Notre Dame of Fairfield in Wednesday's second round at 2 p.m., while Holly Foster and Megan Detwiler each scored a goal.

    • Julia Alicia had two goals and an assist to lead No. 16 E.O. Smith to a 4-1 victory over No. 17 Norwich Free Academy in the Class LL first round. Juliette Hogan scored the lone goal for the Wildcats, who finish 10-7-2.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Nora Ryan had 22 kills and 13 digs to highlight No. 19 Fitch's 3-0 victory over No. 14 Newington in the Class L first round. Game scores were 25-13, 25-17 and 25-12. Olivia Carney added 27 assists for the Falcons (13-9), who visit No. 3 RHAM, the two-time defending champion, in the second round on Thursday at 6 p.m.

    • No. 13 Montville cruised to a 3-0 victory over No. 20 Amistad in the Class M first round. Game scores were 25-5, 25-19 and 25-8 for the Indians (16-7), who visit No. 4 Innovation in Wednesday's second round at 5 p.m. Mackenzie Ullrich had eight assists, eight aces and seven digs for Montville while Abby Diamantini added 13 kills, Haley Kerwin five kills and six digs, Ashley Rewers five kills and Ashley Rogers five aces.

    • No. 17 Ledyard lost to No. 16 Rockville 3-2 in the Class M first round. Mirana Chesnut and Katie Krupansky had 15 kills apiece for the Colonels, who finish 12-10, while Maylyn Haydash had 22 digs and Hannah Avila added 10 digs.

    • No. 10 Vinal Tech defeated No. 23 Norwich Tech 25-19, 25-14 and 28-26 in the Class S first round. Amaya Mendez had seven service points, three aces, seven kills and five assists for the Warriors, who finish 10-12, while Riley Riewerts added six service points, two aces, seven kills, eight assists and six digs, and Jade Houtman Wolchesky had six kills.

    College honors

    • Coast Guard Academy junior quarterback Ryan Jones was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after he accounted for all three touchdowns in the Bears' 24-10 win over WPI in their home finale. Jones went 30-for-37 (a career high for completions) for 251 yards and two touchdowns while running for another. Coast Guard (6-3, 4-2) ends its season at rival Merhcant Marine on Saturday for the Secretaries' Cup.

    • Central Connecticut's Megan Brawner, a sophomore from Ledyard, earned All-Northeast Conference women's cross country honors after placing fourth overall and helping the Blue Devils win the 2018 NEC Championship at Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I. Brawner finished in 18:23 for CCSU, which won the team title with 46 points, their first NEC title since 1999. Angie Rafter, a sophomore from Killingly, won the individual title for Central in18:03.

    • Eastern Connecticut's Madison Bell, a freshman libero from Salem and East Lyme High, was named Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week in volleyball. Bell helped the Warriors win their first LEC tournament championship in 11 years with 39 digs in victories over Rhode Island College and Keene State. She had 28 digs in the win over Keene in the final. ECSU (23-6) plays at Johnson & Wales in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday.
