    Local roundup: East Lyme finishes fourth in Class M swimming championships

    Middletown — Freshman Nikki Hahn placed in three events to help East Lyme to a solid fourth-place finish in the CIAC Class M swimming and diving championships at Wesleyan University on Tuesday night.

    Hahn was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 07.44 seconds), fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:14.37) and teamed with Hiruni Jayawickreme, Katie Keating and Kate Orefice to finish third in the 200 medley relay (1:54.29) for the Vikings, who wound up with 450.5 points.

    Hand edged North Haven for the team title, 588.5-569, while Old Lyme/Valley Regional was 13th with 146 points and Fitch/Stonington was 14th with 144.

    Orefice teamed with Grace Vlaun, Maeve Counter and Mary Kathryn Taylor to give East Lyme another runnerup finish, this time in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.51.

    Taylor was third in the 50 freestyle (25.46), sixth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.81) and teamed with Counter, Keating and Vlaun to take third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.70), while Vlaun finished third in the 100 freestyle (55.70) and seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:00.60), and Keating placed fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:00.77).

    Old Lyme/Valley’s Connie Pan was fifth in the 50 freestyle (25.75) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (55.95).

    Men's basketball

    • Junior Packy Witkowski scored a game-high 30 points while senior Nolan Benson added a career best 17 as Coast Guard Academy rolled to a 92-77 win over Salve Regina in a non-conference game. Witkowski was 11 of 14 from the floor, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, while adding a team-high six rebounds. Jason Frazer added 11 points for the Bears (2-0), who shot 58.3 percent from the floor, while Justin Kane finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

    • Quinsigamond CC outlasted UConn Avery Point 59-51 in Worcester, Mass. Mitchell Holdmeyer scored 11 points for the Pointers (1-4) while Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd added 10 and Trevor Yeomans finished with nine.

    Women's basketball

    • Kaliana Dingui scored a career-high 31 points as UConn Avery Point routed Quinsigamond CC 106-30. Rebekah Sanders added 23 points and 10 rebounds while Mia Brennan had 14 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and four steals, Julitza Delgado had 22 points and seven rebounds and Ashley Burke had 16 points and seven rebounds.

    Schedule changes

    • Three local events have been altered due to the forecast of inclement weather on Thursday. The New London at Middletown football game, originally scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., will now be played on Wednesday at 6. As a result, CIAC officials have moved Wednesday's Class M boys' soccer tournament semifinal between No. 3 Stonington and No. 23 Plainville from Middletown to crosstown Xavier High School at 6:30 p.m.

    In addition, UConn announced that Thursday's NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament first-game between the Huskies and Rhode Island at Rentschler Field in East Hartford will now start at 1 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.

    College honors

    • Coast Guard senior linebacker Jake Behne was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week while junior quarterback Ryan Jones was named Offensive Player of the Week. Behne registered a career-high 18 tackles, including 15 solo, in the Bears' 26-12 win at Merchant Marine on Saturday. Jones was 22 of 42 for 269 yards with three touchdowns.

    • Coast Guard senior Kristen Durham-Young was named NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week after leading the Bears to victories to a sweep of WPI and Southern Connecticut on Saturday. Durham-Young won three individual events — the 50 freestyle in 24.85 seconds, the 100 butterfly in 59.49 and the 200 free in 1:157.10. She was also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
