    Local roundup: Waterford's Dyjak swims to two runner-up finishes in Class S

    Middletown — Waterford's Ella Dyjak had a pair of second-place finishes during Wednesday night's CIAC Class S swimming and diving championship at Wesleyan University.

    Dyjak, a sophomore, was the runner-up to Lauralton Hall's Claire Kehley two events, finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 54.16 seconds) and second in the 500 free (5:08.28). Dyjak also teamed with Elyse Gathy, Jayne Darras and Elizabeth Hawkins to place seventh in the 400 free relay in 4:04.23, helping the Lancers place seventh in the team standings with 204 points.

    Weston won the team title with 896 points.

    Ledyard's Olivia Strelevitz also placed in two events the help the Colonels place 15th with 134 points. Strelevitz was third in the 100 freestyle (54.58) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.96).

    Men's basketball

    • St. Thomas More erupted for 46 points in the second half to pull away for an 82-54 victory over Rise Academy. The Chancellors (4-1) led by only five, 36-31, at half, but held Rise to only 23 second-half points. Nick MacDonald led four T-More players in double figures with 15 while Ghared Boyce added 11 and Brendon McGuire and Wayne Bristol each had 10. In addition, Joel Soriano finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

    Women's basketball

    • Senior Micaela Martinelli had a game-high 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while freshman Kyra Hartman added a season-high 16 points to lead Coast Guard Academy to a 65-52 win over Nichols College in the Bears' home opener. Junior Breanna Wood added a game-high nine rebounds for the Bears (1-1), who overcame a five-point deficit in the second quarter before taking charge in the with an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter that expanded a four-point lead into a 56-44 advantage with 3:09 left.

    Local honors

    • Coast Guard had seven players named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference All-conference football team. Senior offensive lineman Hudson Dunaway, senior punter Chip Crowley and sophomore wide receiver Justin Moffatt were named to the first team, while senior linebacker Jake Behne, senior kicker Cole Austin, junior defensive back Patrick Crowley and junior quarterback Ryan Jones all earned second team accolades.

    Dunaway, the Bears center, was the leader of an offensive line that helped CGA average 308.6 yards per game, 197.7 passing and 136.3 rushing. Chip Crowley led the NEWMAC with a 40.6 punting average (ranked eighth nationally). Moffatt set the single-season Coast Guard record with 71 receptions and led the NEWMAC in receptions and yards (853), and was tied for the team lead with three touchdowns receptions. He had four games with 100 or more receiving yards.

    • Eight local players have been selected to play in the 27th annual Senior Bowl boys' soccer all-star games on Sunday at Middletown High. Team 1 will play vs. Team 2 at noon, followed by Team 3 vs. Team 4 at 2 p.m. East Lyme's Alec Kosinski, Stonington's Jamison Magowan and R.J. Parrilla, and NFA's Jonathan Synott will play for Team 1, Montville's Jack Minas, Julian Valdez and Tyler Velazquez will play for Team 3 and Waterford's James Gregg will play for Team 4.
