    Local roundup: Montville beats St. Bernard girls in ECC Div. IV opener

    Montville — Maya Hillman had 14 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots as Montville opened its season with a 36-23 victory over St. Bernard in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV girls' basketball game on Tuesday night.

    Lauren Velazquez added 10 points and five steals for the Indians while Kara Beaupre finished with eight points and seven steals.

    Emily Nelson led the Saints with 13 points.

    In other games:

    • Bacon Academy, which led 23-21 at halftime, opened the third quarter with a 16-0 run and cruised to a 56-35 victory over Waterford in the season and ECC Division II opener for both schools. Kellie Nudd led the Bobcats with 19 points while Julianna Bonilla and Milly Walker scored 10 points apiece for the Lancers.

    • Miranda Arruda scored 23 points as Stonington routed Fitch 56-28 in the season and ECC Division II opener for both. Zoe Ribeiro added 14 points while Aliza Bell had 14 rebounds and Sophia Bell added 11 rebounds for the Bears. Freshman Rita Sefransky scored eight points for the Falcons.

    • Ashley Williams had 14 points and five steals as Norwich Tech opened its season with a 46-21 win over Vinal Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Geovonna Taitague added 10 points and six steals for the Warriors while Julia Roberts finished with eight points and 12 rebounds and Ashley Bill had eight points and four blocked shots.

    • Kayleigh Lyon and Molly McKeon scored 13 points apiece as Putnam beat Wheeler, 45-20, in the ECC Division IV opener for both teams. The Clippers are 1-0, 1-0. Savannah Galluci scored 10 for the Lions (1-1, 0-1).

    • Leah McComiskey scored 11 points as Morgan spoiled Old Lyme's season opener with a 40-34 win in the Shoreline Conference. Sam Gray scored a game-high 13 points for the Wildcats.

    • Williams School outlasted Forman 35-27. Olivia Kaplan led the Blues with 25 points, including four 3-pointers, while Katie Burzin added four points.

    Men's basketball

    • Hasani Williams scored 12 of his team-high 18 points in the second half with 10 rebounds to pace Mitchell College past Salve Regina, 80-70. Matt Finke opened the second half with a 3-pointer to start a 23-5 run that put Mitchell ahead for good. Finke scored 13 for the Mariners (4-3).

    • New Hampton scored the game's final nine points to defeat St. Thomas More 75-66. Ghared Boyce led the Chancellors (7-6) with 19 points while Nick MacDonald added 14 points, Jared Garcia 10 points and Joel Soriano had 11 rebounds. New Hampton is 8-1.

    H.S. football

    • Five Valley Regional/Old Lyme players were named to the All-Pequot League Sassacus Division football team. Running back Nick Braga, wide receiver Jason O'Brien and lineman Ben Falivene were first-team offensive selections as were lineman Garrhett Watrous and cornerback Jae'len Arnum on defense.

    Youth cross country

    • Old Lyme's Laila Goodman placed eighth at the USATF Junior Olympics cross country championships on Saturday in Reno, Nev. The 7-year-old Goodman, competing in the 8-under division, finished the 2,000-meter course at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in 9 minutes, 5.6 seconds. There were 198 finishers. Goodman had qualified for the national meet by placing third in the USATF Region I meet at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
