    Local roundup: CGA women beat rival Merchant Marine at buzzer

    New London — Annabella Farabaugh's layup at the buzzer lifted Coast Guard Academy to a dramatic 58-56 win over rival Merchant Marine in a women's basketball game on Monday night, allowing the Bears to clinch the Superintendent's Trophy for the 2018-19 season.

    The Bears, who have won the trophy five straight seasons, have beaten Merchant Marine in all 10 athletic contests during the academic year.

    Farabaugh came off the bench to lead Coast Guard (6-15) with 15 points while Zoe Riis-Fallica added 11 points and Micaela Martinelli scored all 10 of her 10 points in the fourth quarter while adding a team-high 11 rebounds.

    Merchant Marine (17-2) had tied the game with 14 seconds left, but with 0.6 seconds remaining Martinelli found a cutting Farabaugh who banked it for the win.

    Girls' basketball

    • Wheeler jumped out to a 17-0 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 36-5 win over Grasso Tech. Leah Pion and Sam Caster scored eight points apiece for the Lions (5-12).

    • Sophia Boras scored a game-high 19 points as St. Bernard built a 29-4 halftime lead en route to a 44-19 win over Ellis Tech. Carly Potts added 13 for the Saints (7-10), who moved within a victory of qualifying for the Class S state tournament.

    • Olivia Kaplan scored 31 points, including five 3-pointers, as Williams School defeated Fishers Island 49-37. Anna Mae Saunders added eight points for the Blues (3-8) whie Constance Tolodo scored 20 for Fishers Island.

    Boys' basketball

    • Scott Pion scored 22 points and made 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter as Wheeler outlasted Grasso Tech 72-63 in a non-league game. Bowen Baker and Michael Warren added 16 apiece for the Lions (4-11) and Ian Spracklin scored 15, while Silas Wiggins scored 20 points to lead the Eagles (3-13) and Jacob Cortes and Luis Duran had 13 each.

    H.S. wrestling

    • Norwich Free Academy completed a perfect regular-season run through Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I with a 57-15 victory over East Lyme. The Wildcats (17-8, 3-0) accepted seven forfeits from the Vikings (3-16, 0-3) while picking put a pin from Yadeill Malave at 195 and decisions from Brando Nieto (138), Eric Plainbull (170) and Ruben Britos (285). Dante Bustamante (113) and Everett Minevich (145) had pins for East Lyme.

    • Logan Smith (113), Joe Morgan (126), Jake Gannotti (170), and Jeremiah Harshberger (220) each recorded pins in under a minute as Waterford won 11 matches by fall to rout Fitch 72-6. Mason Concascia (106), Tyler Radack (132), Donald Mellon (145), AJ Sachatello (152), Jackson Harshberger (182), Elijah Morosky (195) and Liam Ward (285) also won by pin for the Lancers (18-6). Keith McDonald (160) won the final match by pin for the Falcons (4-19-1).

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Woodstock Academy swept the top three all-around spots during a tri-meet with host Old Lyme and Killingly/Putnam/Tourtellotte. Woodstock finished with 142.90 points followed by Killingly (129) and Old Lyme (119). Britney Detuzzi won the floor exercise for the Wildcats with a score of 9.3 and finished fourth in the all-around with 35.05 points. Old Lyme will host the Shoreline Conference championship meet on Friday at ABC's Shoreline Gymnastics in Niantic at 3:30 p.m.

    H.S. riflery

    • Grasso Tech remained unbeaten with an 889-810 win over Wilcox Tech at the Silver City Gun Club in Meriden. Ciselia Colechia and Rick Dunn led the Eagles (5-0) with a scores of 181 while Adam Riffe added a 179 and Alex Potochniak and Thomas Riffe each had 174.
