    Local roundup: Finke leads Mitchell men into the NECC tournament final

    Henniker, N.H. — Matt Finke made a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to lead the Mitchell College men's basketball team to an 87-85 win over top seed New England College in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament on Thursday night.

    Finke scored 11 of his 22 points in overtime as the No. 4 Mariners (17-9) outscored New England College 18-16 in the five-minute period. Mitchell hosts No. 6 Newbury in Saturday's final at 2 p.m. Newbury knocked off No. 2 Eastern Nazarene 74-73 in the other semifinal.

    New England College, which led 39-29 at halftime, had a chance to win the game in regulation but Izaiah Winston-Brooks missed a jumper at the buzzer. The game went to overtime tied at 69-69.

    Hasani Williams had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Steffen Brunson scored 15, Domenico Santiago had 14 rebounds, Malik Chase scored 13 and Finke had six assists for Mitchell.  

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Top-seeded Waterford opened defense of its Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I tournament championship with an easy 84-45 win over No. 8 Killingly in the quarterfinals.

    The Lancers (20-1), ranked fifth in the latest New Haven Register/GameTimeCT top 10 state poll, host the semifinals of both the Div. I and Div. II tournaments on Saturday. Waterford will play No. 4 Fitch, a 49-40 winner over No. 5 New London, at 6 p.m.

    JJ Brennan had 20 points and 10 assists to lead Waterford, which led 29-11 after one quarter and never looked back, while Payton Sutman scored 18 points, Liam Spellman 13, Ryan O'Connell had nine points and 10 rebounds and Kenny Hill had 10 steals and five assists.

    In other games:

    • Chase Anderson scored 20 points to lead No. 7 Woodstock Academy to a 56-42 win over No. 2 East Lyme in the ECC Division I quarterfinals. Drew Menghi led East Lyme (14-7) with 20 points and TJ Horner scored eight. Woodstock plays No. 3 NFA in a semifinal on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Waterford.

    • Top-seeded St. Bernard led 48-22 at halftime and cruised to a 77-40 win over No. 8 Montville in the ECC Division II quarterfinals. Max Lee scored 17 points to lead the Saints (17-4), who play No. 5 Plainfield in Saturday's semifinals at Waterford (noon). Plainfield beat No. 4 Lyman Memorial 58-46. Connor Ullrich added 12 points for St. Bernard, JoJo Beltran 11 and Frank Pacheco 10 while Trevor Meaike scored nine points for the Indians (8-14) on three 3-pointers.

    • No. 10 Wheeler advanced to the ECC Division II quarterfinals with a 58-46 wni over No. 7 Putnam in the first round. Bowen Baker had 12 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists for the Lions (6-15), who visit No. 2 Stonington in the quarterfinals on Friday at 6 p.m. Putnam had beaten Wheeler twice during the regular season including 60-43 last week.

    • Morgan converted made six 3-pointers in the first half and held on for a 57-56 victory Old Lyme in the Shoreline Conference. Jared Ritchie scored 12 points for the Wildcats (16-4), including 8 of 9 from the foul line, while Ray Doll also scored 12 and Aedan Using finished with 11. Old Lyme will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament and host an opponent to be determined on Saturday at 6 p.m.

    • Eighth-seeded Bullard-Havens defeated No. 9 Grasso Tech 52-39 in the first round of the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament in Bridgeport. Jacob Cortes scored 14 points and Silus Wiggins 10 for the Eagles, who finish 6-15.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College's season came to an end as the second-seeded Mariners lost to No. 3 Becker 50-42 in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament. Kelsey Hernandez scored 18 points and Amina Wiley had eight points, nine rebounds and three steals for Mitchell (17-10).

    Women's swimming

    • Coast Guard Academy's 800 freestyle relay team broke a school and meet record for the second straight season to finish first on the opening night of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship at WPI. Sarah Passilla, Kristen Durham-Young, Emily Benson and Josie McGuire finished in 7:31.09, breaking the meet record of 7:32.30 set by MIT in 2015 shattering the school record of 7:34.41 set last season by Passilla, Durham-Young, Benson and Christine McCulla. The Bears lead the team race with 66 points.

    Men's swimming

    • Coast Guard's 800 freestyle relay team broke a school record while placing second on opening night of the NEWMAC Championship at WPI. Devin McClure, Josh Roh, Max McCall and Taylor Rowe finished in 6:46.14, breaking the school record of 6:50.00 set in 2017. In addition, Marshall Seguin placed seventh in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 408.25 to put the Bears in third place in the team standings with 76 points.

    • Connecticut College's 800 freestyle relay team place sixth on opening night of the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship at Middlebury. Charlie Adl, Andrew Eigner, Jaleel Watler and Casey Keenan finished in 6:50.58.

    Men's hockey

    • UConn lost 3-0 to No. 2 Massachusetts in a Hockey East game. UMass (24-6, 16-4) outshot UConn 36-21. UConn freshman goalie Tomas Vomacka made 33 saves.
