    Local roundup: Harvey looks sharp in Las Vegas debut

    Las Vegas — Mystic's Matt Harvey began his Oakland Athletics' career in fine form, pitching four shutout innings for the Triple-A Las Vegas Aviators in a Pacific Coast League baseball game on Saturday night.

    Harvey, the former Fitch High School star, allowed two hits over the four innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He didn't figure in the decision in a 6-5 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes. He threw 38 strikes in the 58 pitches and faced 14 batters. Harvey was released by the Los Angeles Angels in July and signed to a minor-league contract by the Athletics last week. 

    Former Norwich Free Academy standout Eric Campbell was 1-for-2 for the Aviators.

    ECML World Series

    • The Panera Pirates beat the Three Rivers Sonics 5-4 in the opener in the best-of-three Eastern Connecticut Major League World Series. Game 2 is Monday at 6 p.m., and Game 3, if necessary, will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. The series is being played at Washington Park in Groton.

    Eric Javor and Sean Connelly had two hits and two RBI each, Pieter Khoury doubled and Ken Olszewski and Nic Lavallie had two hits each for the Pirates. Chris Gibb and Jon Ryder had doubles for the Sonics.

    New York-Penn League

    • The Lowell Spinners beat the Connecticut Tigers 7-3. Nick Quintana hit a three-run homer in the top of the sixth inning and Avery Tuck was 2-for-4 for the Tigers (30-32). The Tigers beat the Spinners 3-1 on Saturday night. Eliezer Alfonzo, Jose King and Quintana had two his each for the Tigers and winning pitcher Carson Lance allowed two hits and no runs over six innings.
