    Local roundup: Ledyard girls edge St. Bernard 2-1 in ECC Div. III soccer

    Ledyard — Abby DiRico scored the game winning goal as Ledyard defeated St. Bernard 2-1 in an early-season matchup of undefeated Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III girls' soccer teams on Thursday afternoon.

    Lexi LaPerle, assisted by Abby Millbach, also scored for the Colonels (3-0, 1-0), and goalie Savannah Wahrer made eight saves.

    Lindsey Clement, assisted by Erin Londregan, scored for the Saints (2-1, 0-1).

    In other matches:

    • Cheyenne Zvingilas scored three goals during Griswold's 5-1 win over New London in an ECC Division III match. Cassandra Roman scored for the Whalers (2-1, 0-1), who were outshot 20-12.

    • Waterford and Killingly battled to a 1-1 draw in an ECC Division II match. Waterford took the lead on a goal by Claudia Blazquez in the first half (Khay Hatcher assisted), but Killingly tied it with a minute left in the first half on a goal by Chloe Hibbard. McKenzie Gregory made five saves in goal for the Lancers (1-1-1, 0-0-1).

    • Rylee Valliere scored the game's only goal in the second half as Windham defeated Wheeler 1-0 in the ECC Division IV opener for both schools. The Lions, who were outshot 16-7, are 0-3, 0-1.

    • Peyton Saracina scored three goals as Woodstock Academy defeated Fitch 5-0 in an ECC Division I match. The Falcons are 1-3, 0-3.

    Boys' soccer

    • Sebastian Duffy scored a pair of goals as Fitch outlasted Ledyard 5-3 in an ECC Division II match. Caleb Robbins added a goal and an assist for the Falcons (3-1, 1-0) while Timmy Lynch and Peter Petropoulos also scored goals and Aidan McLean had two assists, both coming on corner kicks. Tyler LaPerle scored twice for the Colonels (2-1, 0-1) while Ben Fields added another.

    • Sam Montalto had two goals and an assist to highlight Stonington's 4-1 victory over NFA in an ECC Division I match. Tyler Fidrych added a goal and an assist for the Bears (4-0, 1-0) while Ethan Allen-Fernandez had one goal and Elias Dahl and Will Sawin each had assists. Justin Le scored a second-half goal for the Wildcats (1-2, 0-1).

    • Windham Tech broke open a close game with two goals in the second half to defeat Norwich Tech 3-0 in the Connecticut Technical Conference Charter Oak Division.

    • Grasso Tech lost its first match, dropping a 3-0 decision to Ellis Tech in the CTC Charter Oak Division. Gabe Berry made nine saves in goal for the Eagles (2-1). Both teams had 13 shots on goal.

    • Unbeaten Old Lyme won its home opener with a 4-0 non-league win over Wheeler. Richard Damiano and Michael Milazzo had one goal and one assist apiece for the Wildcats (3-0) while Jackson Warren and Rory Cavicke each added a goal, Jesper Selberberg and Avery Welch each had an assist and goalie Ryan Tetreault made one save. Bowen Baker made seven saves for the Lions (0-3).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Ellie Korinek scored a pair of goals as Stonington cruised to a 4-0 win over Killingly in the ECC. Kaira Wiltshire and Olivia Monte also scored goals for the Bears (3-1, 3-0), Sandy McGugan assisted on Korinek's first goal, and goalie Claire Evans made six saves. Stonington held a 15-7 edge in shots.

    College football

    • UConn announced it has reached an agreement with Maryland to play a home-and-home series in 2024 and 2026. The Huskies will travel to College Park on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, and the Terps will play UConn on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

    Women's soccer

    • Ariel Damary scored twice to lead Mass. Maritime to a 3-1 win over Mitchell College on Wednesday night. Hannah Corrigan scored, Madison Nicynski had an assist and Yordi Slover made seven saves for Mitchell (2-3).
