    Local roundup: Newtown wins Class LL football title on final play

    Trumbull — Jack Street threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Riley Ward on the game's final play to lift top-seeded Newtown to a dramatic 13-7 victory over No. 4 Darien in the CIAC Class LL football championship on Saturday at Trumbull High School.

    The victory was an emotional one of the Nighthawks is came on the seventh anniversary of the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in their hometown that took the lives of 26 people at the school, including 20 children.

    It was the fourth state title for Newtown (13-0), ranked third in The Day coaches' poll, and its first since 1992.

    The Nighthawks trailed 7-0 when it scored twice late in the game. They pulled even with 5:02 remaining on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Street to Ward (Logan Ashby kicked the game-tying extra point). They turned Darien over on downs their own 32-yard line with less than a minute left.

    Newtown then drove for the game-winner, setting for the game-winner with only 3.3 seconds left.

    Darien, which finishes 11-2, took a 7-0 lead with 5:17 left in the first half on Peter Graham's 17-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Mulliken.

    Ward had five catches for 145 yards to lead the Newtown offense while Will Kirby rushed for 114 yards on 24 carries to lead the Blue Wave.

    In other games:

    • Quarterback Kyle Simmons threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three more as fourth-seeded Sheehan defeated No. 3 and defending champion Bloomfield 64-33 in the Class S final at Trumbull.

    It was the Titans (12-2) second state title. They won their first in 1985 when they beat Montville, led by Doug DuBose, in the Class Class S-I final, 21-7.

    Sheehan trailed 14-0 and 20-6 in the first quarter. It scored the game's final 36 points against a Warhawks' defense that had allowed a state-low 29 points prior to the game.

    Jordan Davis also had a big day for the Titans as he had four receptions for 186 yards and three touchdowns and scored on a 7-yard run.

    Davis and Simmons hooked up for an 80-yard touchdowncame one play after Bloomfield's Shakur Hill ran 15 yards for a TD to give the Warhawks (12-1) their final lead of the game, 33-28, in the third quarter.

    Simmons completed 9 of 20 passes for 291 yards and ran 17 times for 56 yards. Terrence Bogan rushed for 195 yards on 23 carries and scored a pair of TDs.

    Anthony Simpson had 10 catches for 174 yards and three touchdowns and ran 10 times for 63 yards for Bloomfield. Hill also rushed for 126 yards on 14 carries while Daron Bryden completed 22 of 48 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns.

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College lost to Western Connecticut State 70-63 in a nonleague game. Amina Wiley led Mitchell (4-5) with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Kelsey Hernandez had 15 points and Sam McKenna scored 10 for the Mariners, who play at Albertus Magnus on Tuesday before going on break until January.

    Men's basketball

    • Keigo Kimura led a balanced attack with 16 points as St. Thomas More rolled to

    a 91-44 home victory over Aim High Academy on Friday night. Sean Macarchuk added nine points and 10 rebounds for the Chancellors while Jai Smith had 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, Charles Williams scored 13 points and Chris Manon had 12.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Williams School went 1-1 at the Mariner Classic hosted by the Rocky Hill School of Rhode Island. Williams lost to the hosts 59-27 before beating the Wheeler School JV team 47-32. Williams (1-3) is on break until hosting the Master's School on Jan. 7.

    H.S. fencing

    • Sam Gresh went 6-0 as East Lyme's boys' foil team beat Bacon Academy and NFA in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Old Lyme also competed. Elizabeth Levandoski went 9-0 for the East Lyme girls and Megan Vansteenbeigen was 8-1 for the Old Lyme girls.
