    Local roundup: Mitchell women advance to NECC semis

    New London — The Mitchell College women's basketball team advanced to the New England Collegiate Conference tournament semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons with a convincing 82-46 win over Elms College on Tuesday.

    The third-seeded Mariners (16-10) never trailed and raced out to a 23-point halftime lead in the tournament first round game. They limited sixth-seeded Elms (9-17) to just 27 percent from the field.

    Kelsey Hernandez led the way with 18 points and Amina Wiley had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Sam McKenna had 14 points and Le'Sandra Turner added 12 points and seven rebounds.

    Mitchell plays at No. 2 New England College (19-6) in the semifinals on Thursday. They lost both earlier meetings this season by a combined 15 points.

    In other Mitchell news:

    • Wiley and Hernandez earned All-NECC honors. Wiley, a sophomore was selected to the first team and Hernandez, a senior, made the second team. Wiley made the first team for the second straight year after averaging 16.3 points and 12.5 rebounds in 25 regular season games. Hernandez averaged 12.6 points in 24 games. In addition, Mitchell's Leilani McClellan, who played at New London, was named to the NECC sportsmanship team.

    H.S. girls basketball

    • Top seed East Hampton led 22-7 at halftime and went on to beat No. 5 Old Lyme 46-21 in the semifinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament. Megan Loflin had six points and Emily DeRoehn scored five for Old Lyme (14-8).

    Shoreline Conference all-stars were announced at the games and Old Lyme landed Sam Gray on the first team, DeRoehn on the second team and Taylor Thompson made honorable mention.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Joey Johnson scored 25 points to lead Windham Tech to a 65-60 win in overtime. Eddie Reyes-Suarez had 12 points, Antonio Brown had 11 points and Ethan McKinney scored 10 for Montville, which finishes the regular seson at 14-6.

    H.S. swimming

    • Ryan Goolsbey and Jay Lin won two individual events apiece as East Lyme defeated Wethersfield 100-77 in a non-conference meet. Goolsbey won the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.51) and 500 free (5:10.09) for the Vikings (10-0-1) while Lin captured the 50 free (24.00) and 100 butterfly (54.99). Robert Hahn (200 IM, 2:09.89) and Ryan Huang (100 free, 52.58) were also individual winners for East Lyme.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Katherine Pittman and Haley Howard scored goals about a minute apart to break a tie and send Coast Guard Academy past Bridgewater State, 8-6, in non-conference action. Pittman finished with two goals and an assist while Etta Davis, Haley McCue, Catarina Goncalves and Maddie Rizzuto also scored for the Bears (2-0).
