    Local roundup: CGA men advance to NEWMAC semifinals

    Boston — Garrett Drummond had 18 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Coast Guard Academy overcame a 12-point deficit to defeat defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference champion Emerson 80-78 in the quarterfinals of the men's basketball tournament on Wednesday night.

    The fifth-seeded Bears (12-13), playing in their first NEWMAC tournament since 2011, have won five straight and will play at top-seeded Springfield on Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals.

    Drummond was 11 for 16 from the field, including 8 of 10 in the second half, and he hit all three of his trifectas. Noah Baldez had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebound while Justin Kane also registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

    Tyler Perez added 12 points while Packy Witkowski grabbed 10 rebounds in the win for the Bears.

    In other games:

    • Fourth-seeded Avery Point defeated No. 5 Quincy College 102-85 in the quarterfinals of the Region 21 tournament. The Pointers (16-13) will played top-seeded CCRI in Saturday's semifinals at 4 p.m. at Massasoit CC in Brockton, Mass. Cyrus Sprague led Avery Point with 24 points while Trevor Yeomans added 18 points, Tyler Zegray had 15 points, five assists and four steals, Mitchell Holdmeyer had 13 points and Alec Gomes had six assists and five steals.

    • Jared Garcia had 14 points and seven rebounds during St. Thomas More's 72-69 road loss at New Hampton. Elijah Perry added 13 points and nine assists for the Chancellors while Jair Currie finished with 14 points.

    Boys' basketball

    • Ian Spracklin scored a game-high 23 points as seventh-seeded Wheeler defeated No. 10 Tourtellotte 60-43 in the opening round of the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II boys' basketball tournament. The Lions (11-10) advanced to Thursday's quarterfinals at No. 2 Griswold at 6 p.m. Scott Pion added 18 points for Wheeler while Bowen Baker had nine assists.

    H.S. gymnastics

    • Stonington has been seeded No. 2 behind defending champion Woodstock Academy for the 2020 Class S championship meet, which will be held on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Law High School in Milford. Woodstock qualified No. 1 with a 138.59 average followed by the Bears with 136.55. The two ECC rivals split a pair of regular-season meetings before the Centaurs edged Stonington in the ECC championship meet. Joining the ECC schools in the Class S meet are St. Joseph (135.74), Pomperaug (131.82), Mercy (128.76), Law (127.99), Hand (126.09) and Oxford (123.39).

    Women's swimming

    • Six Connecticut College athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships from March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C. Vaughn Ammon, Brynn Campbell, Maddie Ford, Andrea Higgins, Tiernan Shea and Anika Svoboda will collectively comprise five relay teams. Ammon, Ford, Higgins and Shea will also compete in additional individual events — Ammon and Ford in the 50 freestyle, 100 free and 200 free, Shea in the 100 backstroke, 200 back and 100 butterfly, and Higgins in the 200 fly.

    Sun deal Banham to Lynx

    • The Connecticut Sun sent reserve Rachel Banham home, signing and trading the restricted free agent to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for a 2021 second-round pick. Banham played four seasons with the Sun after they drafted her fourth overall in 2016 via a pick they acquired from the Atlanta Dream in return for center Elizabeth Williams. She played in 107 games and averaged 11.4 minutes and four points.

    Banham was born and raised in Lakeville, Minn. She finished her career at the University of Minnesota as the Big Ten's career scoring leader (3,093) and was named 2016 Big Ten Player of the Year after averaged 28.6 points her senior year.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Riley McNulty scored five goals as Coast Guard beat RPI 16-14 in a nonleague game. Matty Johnson had three goals and Will Iorio and Taylor Gustafson each scored twice for Coast Guard (2-1). 

    • Mitchell College lost to Anna Maria 22-4 in a nonleague game. Ethan LePain had two goals and an assist and Jade Shields and James Giovanniello also scored for the Mariners (0-2).
