Local colleges: Avery Point's Sanders earns All-American honors

Groton — UConn Avery Point's Rebekah Sanders has been named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-America women's basketball team.

Sanders, a sophomore from Quaker Hill and Waterford High School, was named to the third team.

Sanders averaged career-highs of 19.3 points and 19.0 rebounds per game during her final season at Avery Point. Her rebounding total was second nationally across all NJCAA divisions.

A two-time All-Region 21 first team selection, Sanders leaves the Pointers with a career record 1,016 rebounds while holding the top two single-season records (560 in 2018-19 and 456 in 2019-20). Her 886 points rank fourth in school history, while her 100 blocks rank third and her 147 steals are sixth.

    College wrestling

    • The National Wrestling Coaches Association named all NCAA Division III national tournament qualifiers, including six Coast Guard Academy cadet-athletes, to its 2019-20 All-America team.

Each year the NWCA recognizes the outstanding work of the DIII athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements at the nationals. This year, however, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so All-American honors were based on each wrestler's overall body of work through the regional tournaments.

The Bears' Paul Detwiler (184 pounds), Jon Wagner (197) and Patrick Irwin (heavyweight) were all named to the All-America first team while Noah Caskey of Montville (141), Philip Rogers (165) and AJ Aeberli (174) earned second team honors. Rogers, Detwiler and Wagner all won regional championships. Aeberli and Irwin placed second while Caskey placed third and earn an NCAA bid. It was the second straight regional championship for Wagner.

"These athletes deserve to be recognized for their outstanding body of work during the 2019-2020 season," said Lonnie Morris, NWCA Division III President & Johnson & Wales head coach. "I'm proud of the NWCA Division III leadership group working so diligently to review the candidates and for developing a meaningful process for recognizing this elite group of young men."
