Course: Elmridge Golf Course, a 27-hole course in Pawcatuck

Years there: Chris is in his second season as director of golf.

Favorite hole: The fifth hole on the red course. “It’s a par three over the water. It’s absolutely fantastic. I just love it. I put it in the water every time but I still love the hole. There’s a lot of great holes here.”

Best part about working at Elmridge: “You’re outside and you’re with people. I’ve got a great staff. It’s fun coming to work.”

Favorite course: Winnapaug Country Club in Westerly where he used to work. “I love Winnapaug. To this day, it’s my favorite golf course. I just love the layout and the people. The course has always meant a lot to me.”

Holes-in-one: One. It happened on the 16th hole at Winnapaug about 12 years ago. “It took me 40 years but I finally got it. We heard the pin. It basically went in on the fly.” He still has the ball.

Best golf advice: “Have fun. Play within your means and most importantly leave your cell phone at home!”

Dream foursome to play with: Tiger Woods, Fred Couples and Shania Twain

Fun facts: Chris never intended to get into the golf business. He just fell into it by accident. He was working as a computer consultant and happened to be in the area for a few months for a job when he met George Buck, the owner of Winnapaug, at the course.

Buck offered him a place to stay and eventually a job.

“I was supposed to only be here for a few months. And I’ve been in Westerly ever since. It all worked out great. A chance meeting kept me here for 24 years and it’s going to keep me here. I love Westerly, the whole area is great,” he said.

Chris served as club president and director of golf at Winnapaug for 20 years before making the switch to Elmridge in the spring of 2019. He’s retired from the computer business.

“I just wanted to make a change after being somewhere for that many years," he said. "An opportunity came up and thought maybe it’s time.”

As director of golf, he deals with the daily operations of the course, handling everything from scheduling for leagues to setting up tournaments.

Chris grew up in New Britain and went to high school there. He didn’t begin playing golf until his late 20s.

“I’m not a good golfer,” Chris said with a laugh. “But I enjoy it.”
