    Local roundup: Perez leads Coast Guard to an upset on No. 17 WPI

    New London — Tyler Perez scored 16 points and had eight rebounds as Coast Guard knocked off No. 17 WPI 77-55 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's basketball game on Wednesday night.

    Garrett Drummond had 14 points and six assists and Cameron Brown came off the bench for 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bears (5-11, 2-5).

    In other games:

    • Nolan Molkenthin had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists as Avery Point downed Holyoke CC, 82-68, in a Region XXI game on Tuesday night. Justice Farris of Groton had a career-high 13 points with eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and two blocks, Griswold's CJ Mattson scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half and Trevor D'Amico of Waterford had 13 points and five rebounds for the Pointers (2-8, 2-6).

    H.S. wrestling

    • Windham accepted four forfeits on the way to a 50-24 win over Ledyard in a battle of Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II leaders. The Colonels (10-6, 2-1) picked up pins from Joseph Crader (112), Ryan Taggert (120), Linda Holeman (132) and Connor Doran (138), while Windham had pins from Jafdiel Ramos (106) and Hermin Pomales (126).

    • East Lyme/Norwich Tech wrestlers produced five pins and defeated Fitch 51-23 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I match. Nolan Morton (106), JJ Morse (132), Mike Minevich (138), Jonathan Harms (170) and Noah Santiago (285) each won by fall for the Vikings (9-8, 1-1). Fitch is 2-8, 0-2.

    • Killingly defeated Montville 66-18 in an ECC Division III match. The Indians (2-6, 0-3) picked up pins from senior Blake Chapman and a pair of freshmen — Hector Aponte and Luke Chapman. 

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Nalyce Dudley scored a game-high 23 points, including 11 in the first quarter, as New London rolled to a 53-18 win over Woodstock Academy. Olivia Goode added 10 points for the Whalers (10-3).

    • Alana Philpotts scored a game-high 28 points as No. 9 Hamden defeated Waterford 67-55 in a non-league game. The Green Dragons are 9-1. Milena Walker led the Lancers (7-5) with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Julia Knowles added 14 points and 10 rebounds, Natalie Lombardi finished with 11 points and Mia Chiappone had eight assists.

    • Azaria Darden scored 16 points as Grasso Tech won its first game with a 58-33 non-conference win over Metro Learning Center. Sophie Byrne added 14 points for the Eagles (1-7) and Mya Guilmette had 10. 

    • Lindsey VanLanen scored 14 points to lead Griswold to a 40-14 win over Putnam on Tuesday. Abby Matheson had eight points for Griswold (6-6), which snapped a four-game losing streak.

    Women's basketball

    • Julia Mann scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds as Coast Guard beat Clark 72-60 in a NEWMAC game. Jacqueline Ward had 16 points and eight assists and Emma Puddington had nine points and nine rebounds for the Bears (9-6, 2-2).

    Men's hockey

    • UConn scored three goals in the third period and beat No. 19 Merrimack in a Hocke East game on Tuesday night. Jonny Evans, Jachym Kondelik and Roman Kinal scored goals and Darion Hanson made 18 saves for UConn (11-10, 8-6).

    • Conn College played to a 3-3 tie with Albertus Magnus in a nonleague game on Tuesday night. Seth Stadheim had a goal and two assists, Anthony Quatieri had a goal and an assist and Paul Capozzi scored a goal for Conn (4-7-1).

    Women's hockey

    • Conn College lost to Amherst 2-1 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game on Tuesday night. Caroline O'Keefe scored and Abby Wieczorek made 37 saves for Conn (6-8-2, 2-7).
