Half of state low-income families headed by women

Connecticut ranks fourth highest among all states in the percentage of low-income working families headed by women, according to a new report.

Half of the low-income families in the state are headed by women, according to a report released Wednesday by the Working Poor Families Project.

The report, "Low-Income Working Mothers and State Policy: Investing for a Better Economic Future," cites 2012 Census Bureau numbers, and indicates that nationwide,

22 percent of all working families were headed by women.

However, 39 percent of working families with low incomes had women as heads of household, the report said.
